Lullaby for the Rain Girl

August 21, 2011

Below is my cover art for Christopher Conlon’s forthcoming novel from Dark Region’s Press, Lullaby for the Rain Girl,  which will be available for preorder in September.

I worked closely with Christopher to come up with the idea for the cover art.  He thought that an image of the Santa Barbara County Courthouse clock tower (which plays a crucial role in the story) in the rain could form the basis of a strong cover image and I suggested adding the ‘Rain Girl’ character of the title to the scene to give the image a point of human interest.  With the imagery and use of a muted colour palette, I wanted to capture the overriding melancholy and sombre mood of the story, and reflect the Gothic aspects of the novel to give an ominous and mysterious feel to the cover.

That’s pretty evocative. The tilt is disorienting, as I’m guessing it was meant to be. Where did that come from?

I did add the tilt to make it more unsettling and I think the tilted horizon also makes the scene more eye-catching than having everything run vertically and horizontally as normal.
