Here’s the original cover art for the new edition of Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang by Kate Wilheim for Gollancz’s SF Masterworks series.  Before proceeding with the final art I’d discussed the colour palette with the designer and settled on an overall orange hue.  However, after the art was completed, the editor decided that they wanted to go with a cooler colour palette instead.  I supplied an altered version with a cooler palette which the designer then tweaked further to get the brighter blue image, which you can see in the final cover below, so that it fits in nicely with the bright vivid colours that is the trademark look for the covers of this current series of SF Masterworks.
