The Girl Who Builds Monsters

May 5, 2020

I’m very excited to announce THE GIRL WHO BUILDS MONSTERS, a new children’s book I co-created with author Brian James Freeman. This is the first children’s picture book I’ve illustrated (something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time!) and this project’s been two and a half years in the making, so I’m thrilled that I can finally reveal this project to everyone!

It’s a magical, timeless tale, suitable for all ages, about a young girl named Emma who finds some rejected doll parts in her grandfather’s doll factory and assembles them into her own ‘monster dolls’.  She loves these special dolls and finds out just how special they are when a couple of burglars sneak into their home one night…

The book will be published by Cemetery Dance in September 2020 and is available for preorder now.  It’ll be available as a trade hardback which can be purchased directly from Cemetery Dance and some other retailers such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble.  In addition, it will also be available as a signed & slipcased hardcover limited edition and signed & traycased lettered edition which can be ordered direct from Cemetery Dance.  Both these special signed editions will include an extra 32 pages of bonus material featuring a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the book, with sketches, production art and author and artist notes. Find out more details over at thegirlwhobuildsmonsters.com.

Over the coming weeks I’ll be posting more artwork for the book, including various sketches and production art, on the book’s Instagram page @thegirlwhobuildsmonsters so follow for some exclusive art peeks! In the meantime check out the character images and a few spreads from the book below.

Thanks Joan! I’m really happy with how it turned out. It feels great to be able to finally reveal this project to people after all this time!
